At Lowell Animal Hospital, we offer advanced veterinary ultrasound services to help accurately diagnose and monitor a wide range of health conditions in dogs and cats. Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves (not radiation) to produce real-time images of your pet’s internal organs. Whether we’re evaluating abdominal structures, diagnosing pregnancy, or checking heart function, ultrasound gives us a clearer view—so we can provide the best possible care.
A veterinary ultrasound (or ultrasonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to capture images of internal organs, tissues, and fluid-filled areas in your pet’s body. It’s completely painless, requires no radiation, and is often used when X-rays aren’t enough to reach a diagnosis.
Ultrasounds are often recommended when your pet shows signs of internal discomfort, such as vomiting, weight loss, abnormal urination, or bloating. It’s also used to evaluate conditions like pregnancy, cardiac issues, liver or kidney concerns, or internal masses. Early detection through ultrasound allows for faster treatment and better outcomes.
We primarily use B-mode (brightness mode), or 2D ultrasound, which gives a clear two-dimensional image of your pet’s internal organs. This form of ultrasound is ideal for abdominal exams, heart evaluations, pregnancy scans, and even diagnosing some eye diseases.
